SSDI Benefit Calculator: What Maryland Residents Should Know

Calculating your Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefit amount is one of the most common questions disability applicants ask. Unlike a simple formula, your monthly SSDI payment is based on your lifetime earnings record — and understanding how the Social Security Administration (SSA) arrives at that number can help you plan your finances and evaluate whether to pursue a claim.

How the SSA Calculates Your SSDI Benefit

Your SSDI benefit is derived from your Average Indexed Monthly Earnings (AIME), which is a measure of your average monthly earnings over your working life, adjusted for inflation. The SSA indexes your earnings to account for wage growth, giving earlier years of work a higher value in today's dollars.

Once your AIME is calculated, the SSA applies a Primary Insurance Amount (PIA) formula that uses fixed bend points. For 2025, the formula works as follows:

  • 90% of the first $1,115 of your AIME
  • 32% of your AIME between $1,115 and $6,721
  • 15% of your AIME above $6,721

These percentages are intentionally weighted to provide a higher replacement rate for lower-income workers. The sum of these three figures equals your PIA — the base amount you receive at full retirement age, which is also what SSDI pays if you are approved before reaching retirement age.

For 2025, the average SSDI monthly benefit nationally is approximately $1,537, while the maximum possible benefit for a high earner is around $3,822 per month. Most Maryland applicants fall somewhere between these figures depending on their work history.

Maryland-Specific Considerations for SSDI Recipients

SSDI is a federal program, so your benefit calculation does not change based on whether you live in Maryland, Virginia, or any other state. However, Maryland does have some important state-level factors that interact with your federal SSDI benefits.

Maryland income tax on SSDI: Maryland taxes Social Security benefits at the state level for residents whose income exceeds certain thresholds. If your combined income — including SSDI, other Social Security, pensions, and wages — exceeds $25,000 for single filers or $32,000 for joint filers, a portion of your benefits may be subject to Maryland state income tax. Lower-income recipients may qualify for Maryland's pension exclusion, which can offset this liability.

Medicaid in Maryland: SSDI recipients automatically qualify for Medicare after a 24-month waiting period. During that gap — and sometimes even after Medicare begins — Maryland's Medicaid program (Maryland Medical Assistance) can serve as a critical supplement. Maryland has expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, making it more accessible for disabled residents with limited income.

Workers' Compensation offsets: If you receive Maryland workers' compensation benefits simultaneously with SSDI, the SSA may reduce your SSDI payment. The combined amount of workers' comp and SSDI generally cannot exceed 80% of your average current earnings before disability. This offset is enforced federally but is particularly relevant for Maryland workers injured on the job.

Using the SSA's Online Tools to Estimate Your Benefit

The SSA provides a free online tool called my Social Security at ssa.gov, which gives registered users access to their personalized earnings record and benefit estimate. This is the most accurate way to estimate your SSDI payment because it draws directly from your actual work history on file with the SSA.

When reviewing your my Social Security statement, look for the following:

  • Your year-by-year earnings history — errors here directly reduce your benefit
  • Your estimated disability benefit amount
  • The number of work credits you have earned (you generally need 40 credits, with 20 earned in the last 10 years, to qualify for SSDI)
  • Your full retirement age and projected retirement benefit

If you find errors in your earnings record, request a correction immediately using Form SSA-7008. Correcting even one or two years of missing wages can meaningfully increase your monthly payment.

Factors That Can Reduce Your SSDI Payment

Beyond the workers' compensation offset mentioned above, several other circumstances can reduce the SSDI amount you actually receive each month.

Public pension offset: If you worked for a Maryland state or local government employer and receive a public pension from a job not covered by Social Security, the SSA's Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) or Government Pension Offset (GPO) may reduce your SSDI or spousal benefits. Many Maryland teachers, firefighters, and public employees are affected by these rules.

Incarceration: SSDI payments are suspended if you are incarcerated in a correctional facility for more than 30 days following a conviction. Benefits can be reinstated upon release without a new application if you remain medically eligible.

Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA): If you return to work and earn above the SGA threshold ($1,550/month in 2025 for non-blind individuals), the SSA will consider you not disabled and may terminate benefits after the trial work period.

What to Do If Your Benefit Seems Too Low

If you receive an award notice and the monthly benefit appears lower than expected, do not assume it is final. Several steps can be taken to investigate and potentially correct the amount.

First, request your Social Security Statement and compare each year's listed earnings to your tax returns or W-2 forms. Unreported or missing wages are a common cause of underpayment. Second, if you believe the SSA miscalculated your AIME or PIA, you have the right to request reconsideration of the payment amount — separate from any appeal of the disability determination itself.

It is also worth understanding auxiliary benefits. If you have a spouse or dependent children, they may qualify for additional SSDI family benefits based on your record, up to a family maximum. This can significantly increase total household income from SSDI.

Maryland residents navigating SSDI claims, appeals, or benefit disputes benefit greatly from working with a disability attorney who understands both the federal framework and Maryland-specific tax and benefit interactions. An attorney can review your earnings record, identify errors, and ensure your application presents the strongest medical and vocational case for approval.
